2017 Hurricane Season Update

With the 2017 hurricane season beginning June 1, the college administration has made preparations for potential storms and storm surges/flooding. All college employees are encouraged to take a moment to review their campus and department severe-weather policies and plans and go over the pertinent information with students.  Both employees and students should also review their personal emergency weather plans.

The federal government predicts an unusually active 2017 hurricane season for the Atlantic Basin, with five to nine hurricanes expected to form.  The season officially begins June 1 and runs through November 30.

Overall, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecasts 11 to 17 named tropical storms will develop in the region, which includes the Atlantic, the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.  Of the hurricanes, two to four could be major, with wind speeds of 111 mph or higher and rated as Category 3, 4 or 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale of Hurricane Intensity. An average season typically spawns six hurricanes and peaks in August and September.

Factors contributing to the prediction include: A weak or non-existent El Niño, near- or above-average sea-surface temperatures, and average or weaker-than-average vertical wind shear. Strong El Niños and wind shear typically suppress development of Atlantic hurricanes.

The MGCCC administration wants to remain prepared for any eventuality as there is always a possibility of a storm striking the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Communications play a key role during any emergency, so college information will be communicated through the Regroup Mass Notification System, the college website and social media.

To enhance communication efforts, please review the following checklist:

▪    To ensure notification through Regroup, visit Web Services by logging in through the college website. Once you have logged in to the secure area, update your emergency notification information at the bottom, left-hand side of the page under the Personal Information tab. It will ask you to provide both a cell phone number and emergency email address. You will receive emergency information as a telephone call/voice mail, as a text message and/or as an email message.  Emergency text messages will come from the number 58339.

▪    Employees and students are encouraged to check the website, check the MGCCC Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/MGCCC/, follow the college’s Twitter feed @MGCCCBulldogs and/or Instagram at @mgcccbulldogs for periodic college updates during severe-weather situations.

▪    If evacuation becomes necessary, students and employees who evacuate will find important updates through local television, radio and newspapers as well as the Mississippi Public Broadcasting’s statewide network of radio and television affiliates. MPB’s radio frequencies are listed on all state evacuation signs.

▪    The college administration will continue to monitor evolving conditions in the tropics and will issue updates throughout the summer and fall.

▪    Periodic updates will be posted on this section of the website throughout the 2017 hurricane season.

The following sites are also important to hurricane preparedness:

▪    http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/prepare/ready.php

▪    http://www.mpbonline.org

▪    https://www.wunderground.com/hurricane

▪    https://www.ready.gov/hurricanes

▪    http://www.msema.org

▪    http://mdot.ms.gov/portal/emergency_services.aspx

The safety, protection and wellbeing of our employees and students are of the utmost importance as we prepare for severe weather and other emergencies.

The annual Performing Arts Workshop at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College’s Perkinston Campus will be held June 26-30.  The always popular summer camp is for children who just finished first through eighth grades, and includes workshops in acting, dancing, singing and visual art.

This year, participants will perform “Go Fish,” a musical by John Jacobson and John Higgins.  The show is all about performance, since it stars a tuna fish who can’t carry a tune, a star fish who can’t get an acting job, a seven-legged octopus and a zebra fish with spots. Campers will be able to join in the aquatic fun as little Tiger Shark and his unique collection of friends discover how their differences make them each special.  There will be a final show performance on Friday, June 30.

The camp will be 8 a.m.-3 p.m. each day, and the cost is $85 per child or $75 each for siblings.  Campers must provide their own lunch, but a light snack is included with the cost of the camp.  Campers are to arrive at Malone Hall after 7:30 a.m. each day.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Perkette Dance Team will hold auditions on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at 1 p.m., in the Malone Hall Dance Studio.  All squad members must try out each year.

Since 1952, the Perkettes have performed at athletic events and other functions at Gulf Coast. Sixty-five years later, the college’s elite dance group is a must-see fixture at Gulf Coast football games, at parades and other on- and off-campus events.

Those selected for the 2017-2018 dance team must commit to participating in all practices and conditioning during the year, summer practices and camps, and attend all pep rallies, games, alumni and community events, MGCCC spirit events and community service.  Some required events may occur after the season ends.

Audition participants must be able to perform the following: Perkette jazz march, high kicks, double/triple pirouette, Fouette’ turns, splits and right/left leaps.  Attire for the audition should include black dance shorts, crop top and jazz shoes. (Judges will evaluate bodylines and motions; loose clothing is a hindrance and disadvantage. Therefore, participants should not wear T-shirts, baggy pants and/or sweats.)

Members auditioning for team captain should prepare a 45-second to one-minute personal (original) choreography routine.

MGCCC’s top-rated categories are Compensation and Benefits, Job Satisfaction, Professional/Career Development Programs, Respect and Appreciation, Supervisor/Department Chair Relationship, and Teaching Environment.

“We are proud to be a 2017 Great College to Work For because it is awarded to us based on our employee responses on the survey,” said Dr. Mary S. Graham, MGCCC president. “We believe that providing our employees opportunities to be happy, healthy and to work in a positive work environment allows us to provide the very finest education to our students, the best programs and training to our communities, and outstanding results for our business, industry, education and government partnerships.”

Through the survey conducted by ModernThink LLC and information compiled from the U.S. Department of Education, MGCCC was identified as excelling in six of 12 categories. The survey involved nearly 50,000 employees at 281 institutions, including almost 100 two-year colleges.  All accredited institutions in the United States with an enrollment of at least 500 were invited to participate.

Jackson County Campus Fine Arts Gallery hosts paper doll exhibition

The Fine Arts Gallery at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Jackson County Campus is proud to announce the opening of the exhibit “Where Fashion Illustration Comes to Play: The Paper Doll Art of Tracy Williams.” An opening reception will be held on Thursday, August 24, at 1 p.m., and the exhibit will run through September 22.

Williams said she can’t remember a time when she didn’t love to draw clothes. Some of her earliest drawings –renditions of scenes from the film “Mary Poppins”– spare no detail, especially where the characters’ costumes are concerned. When she figured out that one could get paid to draw for a living, she enrolled in art school and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in fashion illustration. Years later, in graduate school, she rediscovered her love of paper dolls, so much so that she made paper-doll art the focus of her master’s thesis.

“In illustration, the reproduction is the original,” Williams said. “This is the dividing line that sets the work of illustrators apart from that of other artists.  An illustrator creates with the reproduction in mind.”

For her, that is what makes viewing original illustrative works interesting. “There are often patches where the illustrator/editor/art director/client made a last-minute change,” she said. “Sometimes there’s activity in the margins: notes, experimentation, evidence of the business of illustration. As a result of current workflows, the original art may look markedly different from the final, printed version, since the final edits happen digitally – ‘in the box’, as I like to call it.”

The work in this exhibit fits into the illustration category. “All of these pieces were researched and created for the paper-doll sets I have designed,” she said. “The starting point for me has always been a fascination with fashion and a desire to document it visually. I love to draw clothes, and I love to research who wore what when and why. It is my hope that this exhibit will reawaken a love of paper dolls for those whose memory of playing with paper dolls is sweet. Additionally, I want to introduce the art and play of paper dolls to those who have not encountered them before.”

Today, Williams is part of the advertising community, coordinating media for one of the Gulf Coast’s largest casinos, and serving on the board of her local American Advertising Federation organization. Her professional history includes designing logos, ads, promotional material and packaging for clients as diverse as JCPenney, Belk, Matco Tools, NAPA Auto Parts, and the Racine Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps. She is a five-time winner of the American Advertising Award (ADDY Award) for illustration and design.

The MGCCC Fine Arts Gallery hours are 9 a.m. – 3 p.m., Monday-Friday. For more information, contact Marc Poole at 228-497-7684.

The Fine Art Gallery at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Jefferson Davis Campus will host the works of fine-art documentary photographer Betty Press of Hattiesburg August 28-September 21, with a closing reception on September 21 at noon. The show, “Finding Mississippi,” expresses Press’ experiences after moving to Mississippi.

Turning her lens to the local region in “Finding Mississippi,” she explains that exploring and photographing is a personal journey undertaken to better understand the past and present.

“In time, the images may reveal more of this place where I now live,” she said.

In this series, she chose to use black-and-white film and vintage cameras, which she thought were best suited to capture “evidence of the past.”

“The resulting imperfections and soft focus serve as metaphors for how landscape, race and religion have played a part in the complicated history of Mississippi and still affect lives today,” she said.

Press said her travels have led her to bring a singular perspective to documenting the Southern black and white experience, which is so intertwined, and keeps the South a unique region in our country.

“After several years of living in Mississippi but not feeling it is my ‘place,’ I decided to explore the state, still largely rural and agricultural, through a series of road trips,” she said.

She visited small communities listed in the Mississippi Atlas & Gazetteer, often with unusual names like “Love,” “Darling” and “Expose.”

“The landscape away from the Coast is unrelenting in its flatness or undulating pine-covered hills, punctuated by small communities with their ubiquitous churches and well-kept cemeteries, and county seats with often imposing courthouses, always flanked by a Civil War soldier on guard,” she said.  “If people are out and about, I stop to talk, that easy Southern hospitality and politeness coming through even with outsiders.”

She also attended local festivals celebrating music and culture, like the Juke Joint Festival in Clarksdale and the Hot Tamale Festival in Greenville.

She cites Eudora Welty, who wrote from a strong sense of place, as her visual and literary muse. Calling herself a recorder of real life, Welty traveled around Mississippi during the Depression, taking photographs for the Works Progress Administration.

“She photographed not to point the finger in judgment but to part a curtain,” Press said. “I, too, am not trying to change or improve the image of Mississippi but simply shedding some light on this often-misunderstood state.”

The exhibit is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday–Thursday, 9 a.m.–3 p.m., and Friday, 9 a.m.–1 p.m.  For more information, contact gallery director Cecily Cummings at cecily.cummings@mgccc.edu or 228.897.3909.
